Why choose the Trek Marlin Gen 3?
The Marlin Gen 3 range improves on previous versions with key upgrades across the whole line:
-
Modern trail geometry: A slacker head angle and longer wheelbase provide maximum stability and confidence on descents.
-
Increased tyre clearance: Lets you fit wider tyres for more traction and comfort on rough ground.
-
Internal routing and dropper post: Cleaner internal routing, less chain noise and dropper post compatibility or a dropper fitted as standard, depending on the model.
-
Accessory ecosystem: Integrated mounts for a rack, kickstand and mudguards, combining sporty riding with your daily commute.

Trek Marlin 4: for tracks, paths and everyday use
The Marlin 4 Gen 3 is the entry point. Its 8 speeds and coil fork without lockout are enough if you ride on paths, gravel tracks and in town, without heading into technical singletrack.
Trek Marlin 5: the balanced option to get started off-road
The Marlin 5 Gen 3 adds one more gear, a slightly lower climbing ratio and a hydraulic fork lockout, useful on tarmac and tracks. It already has Shimano MT200 brakes. It is the sensible starting point if you plan to ride off-road regularly.
Trek Marlin 6: the biggest step up in the range
The Marlin 6 Gen 3 moves to a RockShox Judy fork, 10 speeds, tubeless-ready Bontrager Kovee rims and a dropper post as standard, which is what gives you the most confidence on descents. It weighs almost the same as the Marlin 5 precisely because of that dropper.
Trek Marlin 7: air fork and 12 speeds
The Marlin 7 Gen 3 is the only one with an air fork, which you can set up for your weight, and a 12-speed SRAM Eagle drivetrain. It adds Maxxis Rekon tyres and a 150 mm dropper, and it is the lightest: about 850 g less than the Marlin 6.
Do the brakes improve as you move up the range?
Not from the 5 to the 7: all three have the same Shimano MT200 hydraulic disc brakes. What you pay for as you move up is drivetrain, fork, wheels and dropper post, not braking.
Which Trek Marlin should you choose?
- Tracks, leisure rides and town: Marlin 4 or Marlin 5.
- Mountain biking on a tight budget: the Marlin 6 is the best buy in the range.
- Serious trail riding: the Marlin 7, for its air fork and 12 speeds.
