Kids' bike sizes are given by wheel size, in inches. What matters most is your child's height rather than their age. Use this table as a guide:

WheelChild's heightApproximate age
12 inch86 to 102 cm2 to 4 years
16 inch99 to 117 cm4 to 6 years
20 inch114 to 132 cm5 to 8 years
24 inch127 to 147 cm8 to 11 years
26 inchFrom about 140 cm10 to 13 years

If your child is between two sizes, look at how they sit on the bike rather than at the table.

How to check the size is right

  • Sitting on the saddle, they should reach the ground with the tips of both feet. For a first bike without stabilisers, it is better if they can put their feet almost flat: they will feel more confident.
  • Standing astride the bike, there should be some clearance between their crotch and the frame.
  • Their hands should reach the handlebar and brake levers without fully straightening their arms.

Don't buy it big "so it lasts"

A bike that is too big is harder to control and to brake, and children lose confidence. The right size is better: the saddle can be raised several centimetres as they grow, and when they outgrow it, it is easy to sell or hand down.

When to move up a size

When, with the saddle at its highest, their knees are very bent when pedalling or hit the handlebar when turning, it is time to change. From around 145-150 cm tall, many children can already ride an adult XS bike.
