Choosing a child's bike is easier than it seems if you start with what matters: the size is chosen by the child's height, not their age. Trek has two kids' families: the Precaliber, designed for learning and first rides, and the Wahoo, lighter and with more gears for kids who already ride confidently.

How to choose the size: measure the child
On kids' bikes the size is the wheel size. Measure the child barefoot and find their height in the table:
- 12" wheel: 86 to 102 cm.
- 16" wheel: 99 to 117 cm.
- 20" wheel: 114 to 132 cm.
- 24" wheel: 130 to 150 cm.
- 26" wheel: 145 to 160 cm.
If they are between two sizes, the smaller one will give them more control and confidence now, and the bigger one will last longer. Sitting on the saddle, they should reach the ground with the tips of their toes; don't buy a bike that is too big "so it lasts", because they will find it hard to handle.
Trek Precaliber: for learning and first rides
The Precaliber 12 (also available as the previous model, at the same price) is the first bike with pedals: a single gear and a coaster brake, applied by pedalling backwards, the most intuitive option for the youngest riders. The Precaliber 16 keeps a single gear but already has a freewheel and hand brakes, the natural next step to learn to brake like on a grown-up bike. The Precaliber 20 7-speed adds 7-speed Shimano shifting and a suspension fork, to start riding on paths and in parks.
Trek Wahoo Path: light and geared to ride further
The Wahoo Path is the bike for a child who already rides well and wants to go on family rides. It has 8 gears and a rigid aluminium fork, and it is clearly lighter: the Wahoo 20 Path weighs 8.75 kg compared with 10.90 kg for the Precaliber 20. For a child, two kilos less makes a big difference on climbs and when handling the bike. It is also available in 24" and 26".
Trek Wahoo Trail: disc brakes for the mountains
The Wahoo Trail is designed for trails: 9 gears, hydraulic disc brakes that need less hand strength, and a rigid carbon fork. It is available in 20" and 24". It is the choice if your child already rides off-road with you.
Which one should you choose?
- Learning to ride: Precaliber 12 or 16, depending on their height.
- Already riding and wants gears, without overspending: Precaliber 20 7-speed.
- Rides often and you go on family rides: Wahoo Path, for its lower weight.
- Rides on mountain trails: Wahoo Trail, for its disc brakes.
